How To Set Up Two-Factor Authentication And Why You Need It

January 14, 2022 odmin 0 Comments

Consider this scenario: You have gone out with pals having a meal, and then the server returns with a regretful expression. Your credit card has declined, it is still declining on the 2nd or 3rd attempt, and now your pals have to pay for the meal, even though you just got paid and have enough money to cover for the meal. Your suspicions are validated when you look at your bank statement. You’ve been hacked, and your balance is zero.

Passwords are in high demand among hackers. Unencrypted passwords can allow fraudsters to obtain access to your credit cards, bank accounts or personal websites, as reported in several news pieces about hacks and data thefts. They can then sell your private information, obtain access to funds, or jeopardise your online security.

But the fight isn’t over yet. Two-factor authentication, often known as 2FA, is a quick solution to improve the security of your online accounts, it adds an extra security layer to your accounts.

What is 2FA?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a  log-in process added, such as a passcode sent to your phone or a fingerprint scanner, that helps confirm your identity and blocks cyber-criminals from  accessing your personal information. Because the thief needs more than your login and password, 2-step verification adds an extra degree of security that cybercriminals can’t get through.A bank card is a good illustration of two-factor authentication in the real world.

Why is it necessary for me to enable two-factor authentication?

It is important to set up 2 step-verification code.
Due to the high complexity of hacking and the overall disruption involved with password creation and use, passwords are frequently made ineffective. Because it is becoming increasingly easy for cyber-criminals to figure out passwords, 2-step verification is now more important than ever.

Fraudsters will have a harder time gaining access to your critical information if you add an extra step to account access. If you add a cognitive aspect to your bank, a cyber-criminal with your passcode is unable to login into the system unless they have access to your phone at the time the verification code is sent.

How to set up two-factor authentication

On your Google Authenticator security page set up a two-factor authentication in these simple steps.

1. Use Google Authenticator to enable 2FA. Scroll down to the ‘Enable’ button at the bottom of the page.

2. Access your 2FA app and scan the QR code with your phone’s camera, or enter the code manually.

3. As a security feature, two-factor authentication is enabled.
If you want to set up a 2-step Verification code using an SMS number, select “Other Forms of Authentication.”

4.After you have set up the 2- step Verification code, please select your country, input your phone number, and then click the “Verify” button in the window that opens.

Please bear in mind that the time it takes to conduct SMS verification differs by country.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

You must first understand the concept of factors in order to know how to set up two-factor authentication. When you need to set up a 2-step verification to access your account, remember these:

  • Biological: When a person verifies their identity through biological signs such as a fingerprint or voice, access is granted.
  • Security questions, a PIN texted to your device, or a certain keystroke are all examples of elements that require your expertise.

To set up two-factor authentication you will need the following:

  1. The user must physically hold the factor, such as a debit card or a USB drive, and insert it into the device to gain access.
  1. The method to set up two-factor authentication is not the same  per application . Two-factor authentication, on the other hand, follows the same broad, multistep procedure:
    – The user must first log in to the app. On the website, you can log in.
    – The user should enter the information that they are aware of, which is usually the username and password. The server of the website will immediately look for a match and recognize the user.
    – The site will generate a unique and unguessable security code for the user for any process that does not require passcodes. The key is processed by the authentication tool, and the site’s server verifies it.
    – The user is then prompted to complete the second login step. Although this stage can take several forms, Biometrics, a security token, an ID card, or a smartphone or other mobile device are all examples of things that the user must have. This is the possession or inherent component.
    – The user may then be asked to enter the code that was generated at a previous step.
    – The 2 step verification is set up and a user is provided access to the application or website after supplying both factors.
